Etchings are drawings on a metal plate that is "bitten" in an acid bath to dig the marks into the metal. This hollow holds ink on the plate and is transferred to the paper when it is run through an etching press. Collagraphs have raised surface above the plate that are inked and leave an embossed impression in the paper when run through the etching press. A monoprint has no design engraved into the plate, but is a surface painting or rolled ink layers with design rubbed, wiped or stenciled with less embossing when run through the etching press.
